Dental Implants

Gaps left by missing teeth compromise the beauty and function of your smile, and can cause a range of other oral health issues.

Drs. Alex Wong and Vanessa Lee provide dental implants, a tooth replacement option with unbeatable comfort, stability, and health benefits.

So, why should you choose our dental practice in Coquitlam, BC, to restore your smile with dental implants?

What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are the most trusted and advanced tooth replacement solution to date. Implants consist of three parts: the titanium implant post, the titanium abutment, and the restoration (a crown, bridge, or denture).

The titanium implant posts are inserted into the jawbone, where they act as tooth roots and eventually fuse to the surrounding tissue through a process called osseointegration. The abutment and restoration are attached at a later time, and patients leave our Coquitlam, BC, dental office with a smile that is both functional and healthy.

The Extraordinary Benefits of Dental Implants

Long-Lasting Results

When properly cared for, dental implants can last for 40 years or longer. While you may need to eventually replace the adjoining crown, bridge, or denture, the implants themselves can last a lifetime.

Form and Function

Our Coquitlam, BC, dentists provide stunning dental restorations that look entirely natural. Thanks to implants, these restorations can function just like natural teeth.

Strength and Stability

Getting dental implants allows patients to eat, speak, and smile with confidence. There is no risk of the replacement teeth shifting or falling out of place like with traditional dentures.

Protection Against Jaw Atrophy

A missing tooth eventually causes the surrounding jaw tissue to weaken. Dental implants are the only solution that can stop bone atrophy from occurring after a tooth is lost.

Natural Appearance and Feel

Implant-supported restorations such as a crown, denture, or bridge are designed to look just like natural teeth. They will be indistinguishable from the rest of your smile.

A Detailed View Of Implant Treatment

Dental implants are embedded in the jaw. Over the course of four to six months, the implants fuse with the jaw in a process called osseointegration. Once this fusion is complete, the implants possess the same stability as natural tooth roots and can provide excellent support for replacement teeth in the form of crowns, bridges, or dentures.

Are You Worried About Undergoing Surgery? Let Us Reassure You

Many patients are worried about the idea of undergoing oral surgery, but you don't have to worry with our Coquitlam team. Drs. Wong and Lee have received extensive training in the placement of dental implants to ensure your surgery will be safe and comfortable.

During the procedure at our Coquitlam office, you will receive a local anesthetic, which will keep the tooth area completely numb during your appointment. If there is anything we can do to make your visit more pleasant and comfortable, please let our office know.

The procedure is fairly straightforward. And according to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, over half a million dental implants are placed by dentists in the U.S. every year, making this an increasingly popular dentistry treatment due to the unbeatable results it provides.

Over 500,000 dental implants are placed in the U.S. each yaer

Preparing for Implant Treatment

Dental implant treatment isn't one-size-fits-all. However, here are some steps to help you ensure good dental implant results:

Undergo Preparatory Procedures If Needed

Some patients may first require preparatory dental care to strengthen the jaw and minimize the risk of complications. A bone grafting or sinus lift procedure will add several months to your treatment timeline, but might be a necessary first step toward experiencing all the benefits dental implants offer.

Discuss Medications With Your Doctor

Certain medications can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising, while others can interact with drugs you might be prescribed after the dental implant surgery. Make sure to discuss all medications, vitamins, and supplements you take with the team at our Coquitlam practice.

Practice Healthy Lifestyle Habits

It's important to establish habits that can protect your implants in the future. Practicing good oral hygiene habits and staying on top of routine dental visits are key to ensuring your implants and replacement teeth are in the best shape possible for years to come.

The Dental Implant Treatment Timeline

Drs. Wong and Lee have received extensive training in the placement of dental implants to ensure your surgery will be safe and comfortable.
Drs. Wong and Lee have received extensive training in the placement of dental implants to ensure your surgery will be safe and comfortable.

Consultation

At your initial appointment, our dentist will conduct a thorough evaluation of your teeth, jawbone, and gums to determine if dental implants are right for you. We use advanced dentistry technology to show you exactly what is going on inside your mouth so you can make an educated decision for your oral health.

Placing the Posts

Our dentist will first numb the area and create one or more small incisions in the gums. Tiny holes will then be made in the jawbone to accommodate the implants. Once the posts are in place, the incisions will be sutured closed. In some cases, you may receive a temporary restoration.

Attaching the Abutment

After a healing period of four to six months, you will return to our Coquitlam practice to undergo a second minor procedure. During this appointment, a small connector piece, called an abutment, will be attached to the top of each implant. Impressions will then be taken of your smile to create your custom restoration.

Securing Your Restoration

Your gums will usually take a few weeks to heal. Once ready, you will return to our office so we can place your permanent restoration. Our dentist will secure your dental crown, bridge, or denture to the abutment, and you can leave our office with a complete, beautiful smile.

What to Expect During Your Recovery

Like any dental surgery, patients can expect to experience some discomfort and swelling after receiving dental implants. Most patients are able to alleviate these side effects with over-the-counter anti-inflammatories. You will receive detailed post-operative instructions, which may include:

Eat Soft Foods

We recommend a soft-food diet, such as smoothies, soups, yogurt, scrambled eggs, and similar textures after surgery. This allows the treatment area to heal properly. Patients should avoid very hot food or drinks and eat meals that can be easily chewed.

Carefully Clean the Treatment Site

Food particles can easily become trapped in the gums. Patients should rinse their mouths out thoroughly after every meal or snack. Gently brush around the treatment site with a soft-bristled toothbrush at least twice a day.

Avoid Strenuous Activities

Most patients can return to work within one to three days after their dental implant procedure, but we encourage you to take as much time off as you need. Patients will have to avoid strenuous exercise or similar activities, as they can increase bleeding at the implant site.

Frequently Asked Questions About Dental Implants

Q. Is dental implant placement painful?

A. No. Your dentist will thoroughly numb the area before your treatment begins. You may feel a little pressure, but you should not feel pain during dental implant placement. If at any point you feel any discomfort, please let your dental team know so we can make any adjustments to ensure you are completely comfortable during your procedure.

Q. I have been told I do not qualify for dental implants. Can you still help?

A. If you do not initially qualify for dental implants due to issues relating to your oral health, we can provide comprehensive dentistry at our Coquitlam office to help achieve a healthy foundation. During your initial consultation, your dentist will perform a complete evaluation to help determine why you may not qualify, and develop a treatment plan to best address your needs.

Q. How do I care for dental implants?

A. One of the many benefits of dental implants is that you treat them just as you would natural teeth. Be sure to brush and floss at least twice a day with a soft-bristled brush and nonabrasive toothpaste. Do not use your teeth to open packages or bite your nails.

Q. How long do dental implants last?

A. Dental implants are made of durable titanium and are designed to last a lifetime. However, your dental crown, bridge, or denture will wear over time with use and will eventually need to be replaced. With proper dental care and maintenance, your restoration can last for 15 years or more. Before sure to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing twice a day. Don't forget regular exams and cleanings at our Coquitlam dentistry practice.

Q. How much do implants cost?

A. The cost of dental implants varies widely depending on your specific treatment plan. A patient receiving a single implant-supported crown without any preparatory procedures can expect to pay much less than a patient receiving bone grafting and an implant-supported denture. Your dentist will be able to provide a detailed treatment estimate once they have reviewed your needs during a consultation.
